FiveM requirements and troubleshooting (2026)

What you need to play GTA RP on PC, and what to try first when FiveM won't launch or keeps crashing. Facts here come from the official Cfx.re documentation, linked at the end.

What you need

  • A legitimate PC copy of GTA V. FiveM is PC-only. Cfx.re says there are no plans for PlayStation or Xbox support, and the FiveM client doesn't run on Linux.
  • Windows 8.1, 10 or 11, fully updated. Cfx.re recommends Windows 10 or later.
  • Hardware at least matching GTA V's own minimum spec. Cfx.re's table lists 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended) and about 105 GB for the game plus 4–8 GB of FiveM cache.
  • The free FiveM client from fivem.net. There's also an Early Access client for GTA V Enhanced, but most servers in our directory run on the standard (Legacy) version, so check which one your server uses.
  • A microphone. Most cities use voice. Text-based servers such as GTA World are the main exception.

Will I get banned from GTA Online?

According to the FAQ on fivem.net, FiveM only contacts Rockstar's services to validate that you own the game, and doesn't modify your game files, so you don't need to do anything to switch between FiveM and GTA Online.

Connecting to a server

Every server page in our directory with a confirmed join code has a Connect on FiveM button (a cfx.re/join link). Opening it with FiveM installed takes you straight to that server. You can also search for the server's name in FiveM's server browser. Whitelisted servers will refuse the connection until your application is accepted.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Crashes on one server only? Cfx.re's advice is to join the official FiveM testing server. If that works, the problem is probably specific to the server, so contact its staff.
  2. Corrupt cache or update loops: Cfx.re suggests deleting caches.xml from the FiveM application data folder, or the whole application data folder if the file isn't there, then relaunching.
  3. Launch FiveM from the Start menu, not from the original installer file. Once it's installed, use the Start-menu shortcut.
  4. "Windows outdated" errors: update Windows. Cfx.re names Windows 10 version 1703 as the minimum.
  5. Stray DLL errors (v8.dll and similar): Cfx.re explains that other apps sometimes leave v8.dll, v8_libbase.dll or v8_libplatform.dll in C:\Windows\system32, and that removing them fixes the conflict.
  6. Antivirus: make sure no FiveM processes are stuck in Task Manager. If your antivirus keeps blocking FiveM, Cfx.re suggests contacting its support.
  7. Older AMD laptop GPUs can have display issues that Cfx.re says come from the embedded browser component (CEF), not FiveM itself.
