Whitelisted vs public GTA RP servers: which should you join?
Every GTA RP city sits somewhere between "download FiveM and play tonight" and "write an application and wait". Here's what the difference really means, using servers in our directory as examples.
What a whitelist is
A whitelisted (often called "allowlisted") server only lets in players whose application has been accepted. You usually join the server's Discord, read the rules, then answer questions about your character and how you'd handle certain situations. Some servers review applications within hours (Legit RP says it reviews them hourly); others take days.
A public server lets anyone with a legitimate copy of GTA V and the FiveM client connect straight away. You're still expected to follow the rules, and many public cities whitelist individual jobs such as police or NHS/EMS.
The trade-off
- Whitelisted: fewer rule-breakers, slower and more deliberate stories, and a community that recognises your character. On the other hand, you'll wait to get in and may be turned down, and there can be queues once you're accepted.
- Public: you can play tonight, it's easy to try several cities, and it's often busier. On the other hand, you'll meet more chaos and random violence, and it's harder to build a reputation.
Some servers sit in the middle
- Job-only whitelists. Roleplay.co.uk and BritishRP x TMC advertise allowlisted Police and NHS roles. LDN Roleplay advertises whitelisted jobs.
- Soft whitelists. Summit RP labels itself "allowlist", but its website says "no applications": you get a Civilian role in Discord, then connect.
- Two cities. ProdigyRP runs both an Allowlist city and a Public city, and NoPixel runs public cities alongside its main one.
Which should you pick?
If you've never roleplayed before, start on a public server to learn FiveM's controls, voice etiquette and basic rules without the pressure of an application. DRILL UK (no whitelist, gang placement on day one), CMG 2.0 Public and STRP Europe are UK-hosted public options. Once you know what you enjoy, apply to a whitelisted city that matches it, for example Capital RP or Unmatched RP V2 for 18+ British serious RP.
Use the filters in the directory: every server page shows "Whitelist required: Yes / No / Unconfirmed". We only mark Yes or No when the server itself says so.
Tips for passing an application
- Read the whole rulebook first; most questions test it.
- Write a character with flaws and a reason to be in the city, not a superhero.
- Answer scenario questions in character-appropriate, non-violent ways where you can.
- Use proper spelling and full sentences, because reviewers judge effort.
- Be patient, and don't spam staff for a decision.
