How to join a GTA RP server (FiveM) in 2026
GTA roleplay happens on community-run servers, not in GTA Online. In 2026 almost every RP city runs on FiveM, the multiplayer platform from Cfx.re (owned by Rockstar Games since 2023). The two older alternatives have shut down: alt:V announced a phased shutdown in February 2026, and RAGE:MP was scheduled to stop operating by 31 August 2026, so communities such as GTA World have moved to FiveM.
1. Get a legitimate PC copy of GTA V
FiveM is PC-only and needs a legal copy of GTA V from Steam, Epic Games or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Console players can't join FiveM servers.
2. Check which edition the server uses: Legacy or Enhanced
GTA V now comes in two PC editions. The original FiveM client runs on Legacy; a separate FiveM for GTAV Enhanced client is in early access. You must match the edition the server runs, so check the server's Discord or website before installing. Many established cities, GTA World among them, still require Legacy.
3. Install FiveM
Download FiveM only from the official site, fivem.net. On first launch it finds your GTA V install and downloads its own files. It's free; never pay a third party for "FiveM access".
4. Pick a server that suits you
- Public servers let you connect immediately, which suits beginners.
- Whitelisted (allowlisted) servers need an application first, often a written form and sometimes a voice interview. Expect stricter rules and more immersive scenes.
- Pick a region near you. UK players get lower ping and busier evenings on UK/EU-hosted cities.

5. Join the Discord and read the rules
Almost every city runs its community, rules, applications and support through Discord. Read the rules properly; common ones cover staying in character, "fear RP" (valuing your life) and no metagaming (using information your character couldn't know).
6. Get a working microphone
Most RP servers use in-game proximity voice, and many effectively require a microphone. A basic headset is fine.
7. Connect
Search the server's name in FiveM's server browser, use its cfx.re/join/… link, or press F8 in FiveM and type connect followed by the address the server gives you. The first join can take a while as the server downloads its custom content.
8. Make your character and start small
Build a believable character with a name, background and job. New players usually do well starting with a legal job, meeting people and learning the city before moving into crime or applying for police or EMS.
